Five ways to save on space when decorating a small nursery

Asher’s nursery

It is a quirk of many old Philadelphia homes that the third “bedroom” in the house in barely larger than a closet.

So when Christian and I turned the room into Asher’s nursery, we had to be smart about the use of space. Here are five tricks we learned along the way.

  1. Get the mini crib. It is a perfect fit for a small room. Plus, it can easily be moved from the nursery to your bedroom if your baby outgrows the bassinet, but you’d still like your little one in your bedroom.

  2. Make sure your changing table doubles as a dresser/storage space. I fit Asher’s pajamas, diapers, creams, medicine, towels, and bath gear all in that changing table and it’s great.

  3. Like in all small spaces, it is a good idea to draw the eye up. In Asher’s room, I added cute little nature creatures to the wall.

  4. Keep the colors simple and light. If your colors clash, or are too dark, it will enclose the space, and make it feel smaller.

  5. Don’t get caught up in buying unnecessary things for the nursery. Less is more when it comes to a small nursery.

Remember babies don’t need a lot of things. The most important thing you can give them is love (and sustenance ;)) So have fun, and don’t feel pressured to make the baby’s room look a certain way.
