Five plants to grow in a small kitchen garden
A small vegetable garden can only hold so much. A fact I am reminded of almost every summer when I try to cram too much in and inevitably need to take some veg out.
To that end, I recommend these plants for their taste, beauty, and economical use of space.
Peppers
Eggplant
Peas
Nurstitium
Herbs
PEPPERS
There is so much variety and fun to be had with peppers. And best of all they don’t take up very much space, so you can grow a number of different kinds. So I highly recommend growing them in your small kitchen garden.
An interesting fact on bell peppers is that red, orange, and yellow bell peppers are actually very ripe green bell peppers. Red bell peppers are sweeter than green ones because bell peppers sweeten as they ripen.
EGGPLANT
Eggplant is another solid addition. Like peppers they don’t take too much space. AND, you can make one of my all time favorite vegetarian comfort foods, eggplant parm, with your harvest.
NASTURTIUM
Nasturtium should always be in your small kitchen garden for the shear beauty they bring to your plate. A compliment to virtually any meal, and simple to grow, nasturtiums are a great addition.
HERBS
Herbs are a great addition to a small kitchen garden. Again, they don’t take up a lot of space. Plus you can harvest them for months on end. Above are photos of lemon thyme and dill I grow in the back garden.
AVOID PLANTING SQUASH.
I recommend not planting squash in a small garden- they trail, they have huge leaves, and the vegetable itself is large. Still, I tried it. And it took over the entire garden. The picture to the left is only the squash in its infancy. I eventually had to rip it out when it turned into a squash monster and started trailing everywhere.
